The Azanian People’s Organisation (AZAPO) in the Eastern Cape welcomes the appointment of Siya Kolisi as Captain of the Springbok Rugby Team.

Siya, a son of the Eastern Cape, is an inspiration to many young people in our townships – those who need to be motivated out of the condemnation of being born poor with no opportunities. This appointment is a watershed moment in our country and must be used to further argue for transformation in the sports, and respect for Black players.

Whilst we are very happy with the appointment of Siya, we wish to warn that, this is not the sum total of transformation in the sport. More needs to be done to empower and select deserving young Black players to this team and franchises in the provinces. We will continue to call for real transformation in rugby.

We wish Siya the best of luck, and hope the team will support him.
