AZAPO’s Expectations on the Budget Speech 2024

Media Statement

TO:                  ALL MEDIA HOUSES FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FROM:            AZAPO SECRETARY FOR PUBLICITY & INFORMATION

DATE:             February 21, 2024

SUBJECT:      AZAPO’S EXPECTATIONS ON THE BUDGET SPEECH

AZAPO expects the budget speech to be a grand theatre where, with an empty purse, the Minister of Finance will promise what only can be achieved in sleep, dreams.

The reality is, there is no money and there will not be any even after February 2025, a good year from now.

South Africa is a country in a grip of a horrendous blackouts. The grip cannot pump energy into the economy. Growth is a paltry less than a percentage point. South African bonds are no longer attractive to invest in. The South African Reserve Bank has not shied away from tightening its vice grip on the economy.

The only thing that works in this country is corruption. Over the years corruption has yielded massive returns for its investors, the ruling party. Shielded from any scrutiny by parliament and protected from prosecution by party loyalty, poor South Africans have been left to deal with the aftermaths of State capture, malfeasance, looting and mismanagement of the economy.

AZAPO reiterates that thirty (30) years in government does not amount to excellence in the knowledge of governance. In this instance it has been a fortification of inexcusable bad habits where public servants become complicit with robber-barons of those they must serve.

As the Minister of Finance deliver his two hours speech, the nation will count the numbers and lament the sums, and not one single life will be recognizably improved by the parade.

AZAPO is calling our people to make this the last dance of the illusionist who believes in his own tricks. The mirage must end this year. The SONA (sun) must set for a perfect New Dawn to emerge.
